In a shocking story, every student from 34 schools in Assam failed to pass the class 10th board exams. The government is now planning to shut down these schools. The education minister of the state (Ranoj Pegu) in an official statement, said that it is meaningless to spend taxpayers’ money on schools with nil success rate.
The alarming
statistics also raise questions on the quality of education being provided in
the state. The overall pass percentage for class 10th exams in Assam
was only 56.5% this year (the 34 schools with 0% pass rate are included in this
sample, there were an additional 65+ schools where the pass percentage was less
than 10%). While the government plans to shut down these entities, its students
will get a chance to apply in nearby high schools.
It is believed
that the COVID-19 disruptions are the main reason for the dismal performance by
government schools. Many feel that teachers were not giving enough attention to
the students and the change in pattern from last year has caused a sharp
decline in the passing percentage in the state. Opposition parties are
questioning the states move to shut down schools and feel that it is imperative
to open new schools and focus on quality of education.
In the past, the
state has taken help from prestigious institutes in the regions (such as IIT
Guwahati) to improve the quality of teaching instruction. The poor performance
raises many questions on the efficacy of the government in imparting quality
education in the state.
