What Are Some Of The Weird Rules At Bob Jones University?
BJU supposedly abandoned its "strange"
policies ten years ago, but the school's Fundamentalist beliefs still serve as
its cornerstone. Students can now go to the movies, women can now wear jeans,
and men can now grow beards with some permissible restrictions.
·
BJU imposes some very strange rules on students
like, preventing students of their residence halls from going to the cinema or
seeing content outside of campus that is rated G or above.
·
The jazz, rap, and country genres, as well as
religious songs based on these genres, are also prohibited at this private,
religious institution in South Carolina.
·
BJU denied Black scholars admission until 1971.
·
The university president once described Pope
Paul VI as an "archpriest of Satan, a deceiver, and he has, like Judas,
gone to his own realm" while announcing his passing.
·
The university prohibited students from
watching movies until 1971.
·
Interracial dating was outlawed after they
began accepting Black pupils.
·
They stated in a statement from 1998 that
"God has divided humanity for his own purposes. He has built barriers
between the nations, including ones that are racial, cultural, and linguistic as
well as land and water-based. God intentionally created disparities amongst
people because He wants them to exist. The barriers that God has built are
destroyed when races mix, according to Bob Jones University.
·
The university prohibited people of mixed races
from enrolling at the school until 2000.
·
After being denied nonprofit status by the US
Supreme Court for 17 years due to their entrenched bigotry, they finally
permitted interracial dating in 2000.
·
A female student who had been raped on campus
in 2014 was advised to "repent" because, in cases of rape,
"there is always a sin under the sin," and she should "repent of
the sin that caused her rape."
·
Their official stance on school counseling is
that all mental health issues are caused by sin and that secular psychology is
a devil's instrument.
·
In regards to LGBT matters, they have a policy
that states, "The Bible clearly labels as immoral and condemns any type of
sexual conduct between persons of the same sex, polygamy, incest, bestiality,
adultery, and fornication of any kind, including pornography."
·
One of the strangest rules at BJU
was the rule that male students
were not allowed within the
Alumni Building and Gustafson.
·
There are strange rules that include
certain kind of hair and beard checks for males, curfews that restrict entry
and exit from certain building after a fixed time. Many students have reported
that the cafeteria doesn’t allow them to take food to their rooms.
·
There are rules that restrict
students of opposite sex to share physical gestures with each other which
include holding or shaking hands or practicing dance moves that includes body
touches.
· Some other rules states that students are not allowed sharing blankets with each other, girls are supposed to wear full pants while participating in sports events, students have to sign some kind of permission parchment before moving out of the campus, etc.
Is Bob Jones A Good School?
Yes, BJU should be your number one pick if you're searching for a conservative Christian education. There are numerous majors available.
The fact that BJU still defends the tenets of religion revealed in The Word of God, attracts students from all across the globe who hold strict beliefs around the norms and practices of Christianity. For a Christian child seeking further education, Bob Jones is one of the best institutions. The staffs are welcoming, cordial, and really interested in you as a person rather than just a paycheck.
Although
the list of requirements for students initially sounds overwhelming, it's all
fairly doable and is wholly justified by the education and discipleship you
receive in return.
The lecturers are top-notch and genuinely interested in their students, those who care to follow the rules and regulations set by the institution and believe in and promote Christianity.
But
their biology curriculum has some serious problems since it emphasizes
Christian fundamentalism over actual biology. One of their goals is to
critically assess the shortcomings of science, materialism and naturalistic
ideologies, and show how the biblical worldview is superior to them in terms of
explaining origins. For example, if you accept that the cosmos is 6,000–10,000
years old, it is also impossible to examine other branches of science like
geology and astronomy effectively. They may function effectively in other areas
where their fundamentalism does not conflict with reality.
Like the majority of private Christian schools
today, BJU is also coming apart at the seams. The institution has made an
effort to restore the reputation that has been damaged over the years as a
result of its views on racial segregation, the LGBTQ+ community, and
intolerance of people who hold different beliefs.
Additionally, when someone is molested, the
victim is frequently blamed. Although they provide a good, fundamental
education, everything in their academic program supports their viewpoint and
disparages others who hold it differently.
Commonly
referred as the ‘Harvard of Christian Schools’, the professors at Bob Jones
University are excellent and kind and the school offers over 130 majors. The
campus is lovely and roomy. There is excellent food and big dorms. Numerous
churches can be found nearby, a Walmart is conveniently located nearby, and all
in all, the college has an amazing location.
Additionally,
BJU is home to one of the world's largest collections of religious art. The gallery is fantastic.
