In a surprising story, 37 students from the prestigious King George’s Medical University (KGMU) in Lucknow were expelled after they were unable to clear their back log for the MBBS degree for more than 20 years. As per reports, these students were provided with multiple opportunities and concessions to pass the course. The university had also arranged for special classes such that they could obtain passing marks in the final exams, many were also provided counselling / coaching.
The NMC
(National Medical Council) had passed a new rule in 2019 wherein students who
failed to pass the MBBS degree within 9 years or 4 attempts could be expelled /
removed from the course. The KGMU management used the same rule and decided to
give the 37 candidates one last chance to pass the degree before expelling
them. Most of these students were of mature age and had school going children.
KGMU did
everything possible to help these students pass. A special committee was also
formed to assist them. But after multiple attempts the management had no other
choice
