Is University Of Vienna Good?

University of Vienna is a government owned research university which is situated in Vienna in Austria. It is among one of the best and largest universities in Europe till date. It was established in the year 1365 by Rudolph IV and holds the legacy of being the oldest university in the German-speaking world. The university is famous for producing eminent scholars and Noble prize winners, it excels in the field of Humanities.

The 657 years old university is a public university which has around 6760 academic staff, 3100 administrative staff, 91000 undergraduates’ students, 16450 postgraduate students, 8940 doctoral students. It is affiliated to the Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities. The Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities covers 21 universities in 16 countries across Europe. After the Revolution in 1848 many changes were made in the university. After the reforms made by Leopold, count von Thun und Hohenstein, the university gained a huge level of academic freedom. At the beginning women were not allowed to become a student at the university but after the year 1897 things changed. With time many departments were introduced in the university, Law was introduced in the year 1919, Protestant Theology in the year 19123, Medicine in the year 1900 and Roman Catholic in the year 1946. Elise Richter who was an eminent female professor of that time used to teach Roman language in this university and she was also the first women to achieve habilitation from the university

Nobel prize winner who used to teach in the university are Karl Landsteiner, Erwin Schrödinger, Victor Franz Hess, Konrad Lorenz, Otto Loewi, and other notable scholars. Some of the notable alumni of the university are Bruno Bettelheim, Hedda Bolgar, O.W Fischer, Edmund Husserl, Percy Lavon, Marie Jahoda, Leon Kellner and other eminent personalities

The university has got an enormous library, it consists of a Main Library and other departmental libraries at different locations of the university. The library is open to the public and anyone can access the library and read what they want to but when it comes to checking out with library books one needs to show their identification to the library staff. There are around 340 library staff, and the library has got its website also from where the students can access various information and journals. At the current scenario the Library of Vienna is one of the largest libraries in Austria in terms of collections of books and faces a huge problem managing its inventory: it includes three Faculty Libraries, thirty-two Subject Libraries and twenty-six Departmental Libraries.

Is it hard to get into the University of Vienna?

To get into the bachelor's degree program of the university of Vienna one must have a good hold on German Language. The courses which are offered in the university are generally instructed in German though there are some courses which are instructed in both German and any other language.  Still, one who is interested to join the course must have a proper knowledge of German language and should be able to show proof that they know the language, they should at least show proof of German language proficiency at level A2. The International Legal Studies program is one of the bachelor’s degrees programs that is offered in both the languages. In these types of cases when the language of instruction is both English and German then candidates must show proof of English language proficiency at level B2 along with proof of German language proficiency at level A2. In the matter of becoming proficient in German language the University of Vienna will be there to help you. One can take the course of German language which is offered by the university itself.

The master’s programs in this university are generally instructed in English but there are few courses which are offered in both English and German or any other specific language.  Like bachelor’s degree programs which involve German language, the candidates need to submit proof of their German proficiency also in the master’s degree programs which require German language. It is better to have proficiency in German language even if your program doesn’t require German because in Austria every now and then you will face problems if you don’t know German as the official language of Austria is German.

The university is in the city of Vienna which is the capital city of Austria. Austria is located at the heart of Europe or in other words it is situated in Central Europe. It is a landlocked mountainous country which is surrounded by Germany, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Liechtenstein, Italy, and Switzerland. Is University Of Vienna Free For International Students? 

For the EU/EEA/CA citizens, the students must pay only the Students Union fee which is 21.20 Euro till the standard duration of the program along with the extra two tolerance sem. After the end of the two-tolerance year the candidates must pay their tuition fee along with the Students Union fee which is (363.36 + 21.20 = 384.56) Euro

Bachelor’s degree program: - 6 sem + 2 tolerance sem

(One must pay the tuition fees after 8th sem)

Master’s degree program: - 4 sem + 2 tolerance sem

(One has to pay the tuition fees after 6th sem)

Doctoral /PhD program: - 6 sem + 2 tolerance sem

(One must pay the tuition fees after 8th sem)

For the non-EU/EEA citizens, the students must pay the tuition fees on time to pursue the degree program.

One must pay 726.72 Euro along with the Students Union fee which is 21.20 Euro. The total amount one must pay is 747.92 Euro. Though there are few exceptional cases like when the students are from certain groups, or they have a residence permit other than student in the country of Austria then those students can apply for equal status with EU/EEA citizens. In that case the student must pay the same tuition fees as EU/EEA citizens. Another exception is that the citizens of few developing countries are given the perks of paying only the Students Union fee, their tuition fee for the entire degree program is remitted.  The countries which come under the list are Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Mali, Chad, Cambodia, Liberia, Uganda, Sudan, Myanmar, Zambia and a few other countries .

How to apply to University of Vienna

Not only in the university of Vienna but also if one applies for any programs in any university of Austria, he or she needs to show proof of German language proficiency. The programs which require English language students must go through exams like IELTS, PTE, TOEFL OR Cambridge certificate etc.

To apply for the University of Vienna one must go through the entrance exam procedure for almost every degree program whether it be bachelor’s or masters. The procedure of the entrance exam may differ from program to program, some may conduct a written exam and the other many goes for a CV (especially in master’s degree program). Detailed exam procedures for every program are thoroughly explained in the official website of the university. The application period of the academic session 2022/23 is over and the application deadline of the next academic year 2023/24 will be announced in March of 2023. If one appears for the entrance exam procedure of the academic session 2023/24 and successfully passes the exam, then he or she is eligible to take admission in the winter semester 2023/24 which generally starts from October. There is no entrance exam for the summer semester, so to take admission in the summer semester 2024 one must clear the entrance exam which will be conducted at the beginning of the academic year 2023/24.
