The Government of India in an affidavit to the Supreme Court said that they will not be able to accommodate Ukraine returned MBBS students into Indian medical colleges. Thousands of Indian students had to flee Ukraine owing to the geopolitical situation in the country. The center argued that most of these students opted to study in Ukraine due to poor marks in the NEET (National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test) exam or due to affordability of medical courses in Ukraine. The government also feels that allotting medical seats to students who could not qualify for the NEET exam will lead to widespread litigation / disputes.
The centers arguments
were based on the fact that many students who could not qualify for the NEETexam had to either take admission into lesser-known colleges or drop their
plans of studying medicine. Using a default methodology of allocating
government college seats to Ukraine returned students would not be fair for
such candidates and would lead to a high volume of litigation.
The tense
geopolitical situation in Ukraine has led to mass disruptions in the lives of
its residents. Thousands of students were forced to head back to India and have
been left in a dilemma about their future. The governments remarks make it
clear that these students will now need to fend for themselves and course
correct their education journeys.
